Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM)
Loss of insulin production required to process glucose due to autoimmune destruction of pancreatic beta cells. Undiagnosed T1DM can result in hyperglycemia, a hyperglycemic crisis, Diabetic Ketoacidosis, and death.
T1DM results in the total Inability to process glucose without insulin injections.
Signs and symptoms of T1DM include:
- Hyperglycemia.
- High HbA1c.
- Polyphagia (due to glucose not entering cells).
Management of T1DM requires:
- Careful monitoring of blood glucose.
- Careful monitoring of symptoms of diabetic neuropathy (ex: feet inspections).
- Insulin injections.
Dangers associated with T1DM include:
- Diabetic Ketoacidosis.
- Hypoglycemia due to erroneous insulin injections.
- Diabetic neuropathy including ulcers.
